Ishikawa Prefecture is located in the center of the main island of Japan. It has a north-south coastline along the Sea of Japan, and an area of approximately 4,185m2. The population is 1,178,909 (as of January 1, 2004). Kanazawa, Ishikawa's capital city, has many major institutions, including branch offices of national organizations, financial institutes, and leading companies. It plays an important role as the political and economic center of the three prefectures that make up the Hokuriku region, and has good access to the major cities of Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya.
Ishikawa is also blessed with a natural environment of mountains, coastal areas and rivers, as represented by Noto Peninsula Quasi-national Park, Echizen-Kaga Coast Quasi-national Park and Hakusan National Park.
In addition, Ishikawa has preserved its traditional culture that flourished in the Edo period (1603-1867). Since the prefecture has not suffered from wartime attacks or great natural disasters such as earthquakes, it retains many historical sites such as Kenrokuen, one of the three most beautiful gardens in Japan, historical buildings and precious cultural assets. It has also preserved traditional crafts and industries, as well as performing arts, through the generations.
